The problem with emotional neglect is that sometimes our parents mean no harm when they do this.

You may have very loving parents who did everything they could to raise you properly.

They may have worked hard to earn enough money to buy food, clothes, toys, and pay for school.

But they may have invalidated your emotions from the moment you started crying, expressing anxiety, or feeling anger as a child.

Sometimes because they too were emotionally neglected as children.

They may be faced with physical illness, divorce, loss of a loved one, or job loss. They may be locked away in their inner world, depressed, and closed to others.

Understanding them is the first step to forgiving them.

Childhood Emotional Neglect can manifest in different ways:

1. Invisible Wounds 🧐

You may struggle to pinpoint the source of your emotional pain.

2. Self-Abandonment 😔

You may consistently prioritize the needs and feelings of others over your own.

3. Difficulty Expressing Emotions 🤐

CEN can result in an inability to articulate your feelings, which can be frustrating for both you and your loved ones. It's like speaking a language you never fully learned.

4. Difficulty Regulating Emotions 😓

Sometimes we never had the opportunity to fully experience them, because we had to repress them and suppress their expressions.

We can keep everything deep down inside... and suddenly erupt on people later.

We may never have learned the emotional landscape of being a human.

5. Aversion to vulnerability and reject 😖

Sharing your emotions can feel terrifying. Vulnerability might be equated with weakness, leaving you unable to forge deep connections.

6. Perfectionism 💪

Success becomes the only way to feel 'good enough.'

7. Unhealthy relationships 💔

We may realize that we struggle when we try to find a partner and create a family, and experience:

- Codependence
- Enmeshment
- Abusive relationships
- Avoidance

8. Loneliness and isolation 🚫

We may experience difficulties engaging in relationships or isolate ourselves most of the time.

9. Feeling numb and empty 😶

“I don’t feel anything”... Maybe we heard “I don't have time for that stuff”...so we bury it deep inside, and move on...

🙄 Monday... Raaah, Monday... Not my favorite da

🙄 Monday... Raaah, Monday... Not my favorite day, that's for sure.

But you know what I do? I turn it into a day of Accomplishment. Victory. Of Liberation. 💪

Monday is my "administrative sh*t day", where I tackle all those tedious tasks I keep putting off.

Why? Because I want to be free to do what I love the rest of the week.

I get rid of all the clutter. And it gives me an incredible feeling of lightness. I clear my mind of all the "I should do's".

And I've got my tricks up my sleeve.

First of all, I plan a royal breakfast. Salted butter pancakes, waffles, or a King Size American breakfast - whatever will motivate me to get out of bed.

Then I dive into emails/bills/files/forms/calls for two hours. Not more - that's enough.

Then I take a break and go for a walk in nature.

I don't stop until I've finished what I wanted to do - but I do sprints of 25 minutes, then breaks every two hours.
It's a rhythm that all productivity gurus know, called the Pomodoro technique, with more neuroscience on top.

And in the evening... mmmm, in the evening...
I always plan a good bath, a massage, a film or a series - ideally a fine dinner with friends.

A reward.

Knowing that I do this every Monday has allowed me to see it as a warm-up for the week. It's the worst day for most of us, so why not dive right in?

And then, it's also the time when some of us catch up with colleagues after a weekend of solitude. That's right. So Monday morning can be the time to get all dolled up and get back into the swing of things.

So, if Monday isn't your favorite day either, why not try making it a productive one? Because you'll be super proud of yourself, I guarantee it.

There's a hidden facet of our upbringing that often goes unnoticed, yet it casts a profound and enduring shadow on our emotional well-being.

Having a crappy childhood doesn't always involve physical neglect, abuse, or overt maltreatment.

If “no crying allowed” was a rule or if “it wasn’t that bad” was a phrase you heard as a child,

If one or both of your parents were not able to make you feel listened to, understood, supported, and part of a family,

Chances are, you experienced what is called childhood emotional neglect.

It can happen in seemingly functional families, where the absence of emotional warmth and communication goes unnoticed. It's not about what was done to us, but what wasn't done for us.

CEN is like a silent storm 🌪️ that rages within, leaving scars unseen to the naked eye - but deeply etched in our hearts, bodies, and minds.

It occurs when our emotional needs aren't met during our formative years.

The absence of emotional validation, empathy, connection, support, and soothing can have a lasting impact.

It can shape the way we navigate relationships, cope with challenges, and understand our own emotions.
